Oppose Sanctions on Cuba - Establish Sister Cities

The Seattle Chapter of Vietnam Veterans Against The War Anti Imperialist (VVAWAI) welcomes and supports the establishment of people-to-people relationships between King County and Granma Province in Cuba. There is a rich history in King County of international trade, cultural exchange and people-to-people diplomacy with countries around the world. This type of diplomacy has lead to greater understanding between nations, something that is desperately needed as Bush's "War of Terror" drives the U.S. into greater and greater isolation from the rest of the world.

Carl Von Clausewitz, a soldier and philosopher, said War is a mere continuation of policy by other means. Sanctions function in the arena of international politics as a means of coercion where one or more states force another to comply with their demands. Often sanctions have been called a humane alternative to war, however they are nothing more than an even more insidious form of war. If you were to ask the people of Cuba as well as the people of Iraq about the humaneness of sanctions, the answer you would receive would be loud and clear: "Sanctions are war!"

The sanctions imposed against Cuba by the U.S. are a stark reminder of the hypocrisy behind the U.S. claim to be the "champion of freedom and democracy." Like the sanctions and attacks against Iraq, the sanctions against Cuba are an attempt by the U.S. to dictate to the people of Cuba who their leader should be. Like the people of Iraq, the people of Cuba have refused to bow down to the U.S. and have paid the price. For more than three decades, the effects of the sanctions have been particularly devastating to health and welfare of women and children.

As veterans of U.S. imperialism, we have learned the reality behind its aggression, wars and interventions. We have learned that our allegiance is not to it but to the people of the world. We support all actions and activities that spread and encourage people to people relationships. VVAWAI support the establishment of sister city relations between the Granma Province in Cuba and King County in Washington state.

The Cuban People Are Not Our Enemies But Our Sisters And Brothers!

End ALL Sanctions Now!
