Some Thoughts on "Black Hawk Down" |
|
Recently the movie "Black Hawk Down" by Ridley Scott was released and quickly proclaimed the "Number 1 movie in America". It is supposed to be based on the events of the U.S. intervention in Somalia in 1993. Even the trailers raised doubts about how much of the truth was being presented. Initially, some of us in VVAWAI were skeptical of seeing the movie and were thinking of boycotting it. However, we realized that it was important to see it and then inject reality into the fantasies of Hollywood. We have seen how movies have been used to paint a different reality on the actions of the U.S. military and leave people in this country cheering those actions -- actions which have resulted in the deaths of innocent people and the destruction of their way of life. As veterans of the U.S. military, we know the reality and cannot keep quiet as the people of this country as lulled into supporting the crimes against humanity committed by its government and military. Here are some contributions to the battle against this "rewriting of history".
