statement by VVAWAI Seattle chapter U.S. Imperialism and the Islamic Republic are bothEnemies and Oppressors of the People of Iran1946—1979: U.S. Imperialism the main sponsor and backer of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. Decades of repression. SAVAK. Development of Iran as a militarized dependent-capitalist society. U.S. employs Iran as a regional gendarme. Brutal oppression and suffering of majority of Iranian people. 1953: U.S. CIA and UK MI6 orchestrate coup against elected Prime Minister Mossadegh 1979: As a last resort the U.S. gives green light for transfer of power from Shah regime to Khomeini. The U.S. does this to prevent the revolution from going further. The U.S. embassy remains a center for spying and covert activities... to continue domination of Iran. When the Shah enters the U.S. Iranian students righteously seize the embassy. U.S. imposes sanctions, attacks and threatens Iran. The Islamic Republic uses this as pretext and cover to repress progressive people and movements. A U.S. faction arranges with regime to withhold resolution of crisis to influence domestic U.S. election. 1980: U.S. gives Iraq “green light” to attack Iran. U.S. imperialism, its allies and rivals arm both sides through the course of the war. 1982: CIA provides names of progressive, revolutionary and secular/opposition activists to Islamic Republic to assist in murderous suppression and mass imprisonment of these people. U.S. and Israel sell arms to Iran; use proceeds to illegally arm the CIA organized “Contras” of Nicaragua. 1987-88: Stability of Iraqi regime is under threat. U.S. decisively tilts towards Iraq: attacks Iranian targets multiple times during “war of the tankers”. U.S. works closely with Iraqi regime: providing material and intelligence support in a series of major offensives against Iran and its Kurdish nationalist allies. Iraq uses chemical weapons made from material supplied by U.S. and Europe with full knowledge of U.S. July3, 1988: USS Vincennes shoots down Iran Air flight 655 killing 290 people. This cold blooded massacre is a warning to Iranians of worse to come if Iran doesn't yield. July19, 1988—Dec 1989: Islamic Republic secretly executes tens of thousands of political prisoners on basis of religious interrogations. 1990's: U.S. wages ongoing war on Iraq while Iran regime stands by. In Iran, serial murders of dissidents and opponents of Islamic Republic. Repeated protests repressed. 2000's: Repeated U.S. threats against Iran based on Israeli orchestrated allegations against Iran nuclear program. 2001—present: Islamic Republic collaborates with U.S. invasion and occupation of Afghanistan. 2003—present: Islamic Republic collaborates with U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. Iraqi puppet regime led by political parties allied with the Islamic Republic. 2007—present: U.S. special forces wage clandestine warfare against Iran in Iranian territory. 2008: High profile threats and deployments against Iran. Plans for massive bombing perfected and openly discussed. June 2009—present: Mass upsurge against Islamic Republic triggered by election crisis. Real potential for revolutionary change to be brought forward. U.S. and other imperialists seek to use the mass movement and conflict within Islamic Republic to bring Iran and the region more firmly under their control. U.S.-- Israeli “tag team” military threats against Iran. Massive U.S. escalation in Afghanistan.
