Only You Can End the War

Crimes are crimes, no matter who commits them. This war, from its onset to now, has been a crime against humanity, and people of conscience must oppose it. You must oppose it. The point that must be grasped, and acted on with the courage, creativity, daring, and moral clarity of our convictions, is that this war is unjust, immoral, and illegal, regardless of who is in charge.

Mission Atrocious: Winter Soldier Book Offers Perspective on Occupations

IN THE SPRING of 2008, as America entered its sixth year of the Iraq occupation, hundreds of service members gathered outside of Washington, D.C. to provide first-hand testimony about what is really happening on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan. Inspired by Revolutionary War hero Thomas Paine who called on patriots to stand up for their country in its darkest hours, over 60 veterans testified at Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan.

The collective testimony presented in Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan, Eyewitness Accounts of the Occupations, includes personal stories ranging from the U.S. military's continual disregard for the official Rules of Engagement to the VA's systematic denial of mental health care for returning veterans. Their testimonies show these are not isolated incidents perpetrated by a 'few bad apples,' but the logical outcome of faulty policy by the Administration.

The book also features the stories of military families and Iraqi civilians who have been affected by the occupations.

Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan preserves and honors the participants' courageous contributions as they continue to embolden the GI Resistance Movement and work to end the occupation of Iraq.

Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) was founded by Iraq war veterans in July 2004 to allow servicemen and women from all branches of the military a chance to come together and speak out against an unjust, unwinnable and illegal occupation. Today, IVAW has over 1,300 members in 49 states, Washington, D.C. and Canada, and on military bases in the U.S. and overseas, including Iraq.
