Global Village

By Gary Erb

If the world were a global village
Gart Brothers wouldn't have garments on racks.
Dark-haired 10 year-old girls
Would work at their sewing machines on the sales floor.

If the world were a global village
Beverly Hills would have ponds of dumped chemicals.
The fashionable Hamptons
Would have a copper smelter.

If the world were a global village
Burnt, dead women still holding burnt babies
Would line the rubble strewn streets
Of a smoldering Omaha, Nebraska.

If the world were a global village
Central Los Angeles would be fashionable.
Bombs dropped by airplanes on outlying slums
Would make the ground tremble,
But make some feel safe.

If the world were a global village
I wouldn't have to write poems like this.
