A Ranting Review of the Movie

Independence Day

Independence Day is nothing but a thinly veiled piece of pro-America propaganda strategically timed to coincide with the patriotic fervor of July 4th and the Olympic Games. With all the publicity hype, it was obvious that the system wanted as many people around the world as possible to see this movie. And they weren't looking to just preach to the converted. The bourgeoisie is ambitious. They want to brainwash everybody. Even those of us who watched the trailer with glee as the White House exploded found ourselves sucked into the theater. When all the dangerous ideas that this movie promotes thrust themselves into our faces, it became clear why the imperialist/capitalist/Hollywood system went to so much trouble.

That said, go see the movie. Then go-off about it to everyone you know. The Germans should have studied the Nazi propaganda films and then mobilized people against them. Ignoring this shit, even refusing to give your money to it, doesn't make it go away.

Independence Day is about all the countries of the world lining up behind the U.S. to fight the evil aliens that threaten the American way of life. In other words, Independence Day is about the U.S. led UN fighting outlaw states, terrorists, revolutionaries, anything that threatens the New World Order. The movie President (Why didn't they just let Clinton play himself?) says, 'In the Gulf War, we knew what we had to do and we did it. Things are different now. It's not so simple anymore.' As people who are struggling to fight U.S. intervention today, on one hand we can say, 'You're telling us!' But on the other hand we have to say, 'Bullshit! The human casualties of war continue to mount. Call it what you will: UN peacekeeping, humanitarian intervention, making the world safe for democracy, defending innocent people against terrorism-Imperialism is still imperialism.'

But in the movie, things really are different! These are aliens! They don't want to negotiate! There is no middle ground! When the movie Clinton asks the alien, "What do you want us to do?," the alien replies ominously, "Die!" See, you can't compromise with these folks! It's either them or us. So now the unacceptable becomes acceptable: nuclear warheads are used. Even the liberal scientist sees no other alternative. And you thought the use of nuclear warheads could never be justified! Will the sequel (let's hope not!) feature the perils of life and death on a radioactive planet Earth?

So the U.S. has an unprecedented crisis on its hands and the clock is ticking. Lucky for them they won't be slowed down by any opposition to their war plans-because there's no class antagonism in America at the movies! The world as we know it is at stake and the situation demands that we all pull together! Strippers are hanging out with first ladies, presidents are engaging in combat-No sir, this is not the kind of ruling class that hides in their underground bunker and forces the children of the poor to fight their wars. This government is down with the masses! Hell, they are the masses!

Forget about the conscious resistance of Black GIs during the Vietnam War. The only 'Black power' you're gonna see in this movie is an officer who can't wait to risk his ass for The Man-no questions asked. The few "traitors" who welcome the aliens hoping they'll make the world a better place, or at least take them away from this screwed up planet, are immediately betrayed with a deadly zap. That's what you get for fraternizing with the enemy.

The Vietnam vet in this movie could've told you that. He's suffering from PTSD, steeped in alcoholism. He's been that way since the war, but this is just the kind of opportunity that can turn your life around. All his problems are solved in an instant with a heavy dose of patriotic duty. He volunteers for a suicide mission and saves the world. Finally his children are proud of him.

The U.S. government wishes it was that easy to gather Vietnam vets back into the fold. We have one message for a system that makes trash like Independence Day: "Burn Hollywood Burn!"
