Ideas for Action: Relevant Theory for Radical Change

Reviewed by Ian Antius

Thumbs UpIdeas for Action Book by Cynthia Kaufman, published by South End Press in 2003. When I first saw the cover of this book, I was drawn to it by its title, particular the part about "radical change." Having been a "radical" more years than not and very interested in change, I was eager to read the book. I was not disappointed. Cynthia Kaufman has taken the complex topics of capitalism and change and presented a very good high-level overview that is an excellent basis for understanding what is wrong with the world and what can be done.

In this book, she writes about capitalism, class, freedom, globalization, racism, feminism, the role of governments and what is possible, not in the dry language of an intellectual but in a way that is understandable by all and reflects her own experiences and involvements. This book is not only a good foundation for those who are just coming into action because of the recent war and events but is also a good refresher for those who have been in the struggle for some time. While the book does not present a specific roadmap for change, it does present the need for change and encourages the reader to learn how to make that change.
